Ecotasa in Mallorca: how to calculate and charge the tourist tax correctly
The Balearic tourist tax is charged per person, per night – and depends on the season, the guest's age and the type of accommodation. Here's how to calculate it correctly and collect it transparently.

What is the Ecotasa?
The Ecotasa is the Balearic Islands' sustainable tourism tax. It's charged per person, per night, and is collected by the accommodation provider and passed on to the authorities.
What determines the amount
- type and category of accommodation
- season (high and low season rates differ)
- age of guests – under-16s are exempt
- length of stay, as reductions can apply for longer stays
Common pitfalls
Charging a flat amount per booking quickly goes wrong when guests stay for different lengths of time. Always calculate per person, per night.
Collecting it transparently
Show the tax separately from the rental price and provide a receipt. If guests pay it during online check-in, there's no need to collect cash on site – and every payment is clearly assigned.
Our recommendation
Store the current rates for each property and let the amount be calculated automatically from arrival and departure dates and guests' ages. Check the rates every year, as they can change.
